What is Right Speech?

The quality of 'Right Speech' highlights just that: the quality of speech. But this is not a section about great oratory! It focuses our attention on what we say versus what we need to say. It's very easy to chatter without really saying anything, equally it's often the hardest thing in the world to say what is really true in our hearts.

So, Right Speech suggests we try and reduce the empty chatter, and focus more on the honesty and quality of what we say. Developing an inner calm allows us to take time to think before we speak, so we say less but speak more meaningfully. Words can heal but words can be very damaging, so Right Speech is important in making sure we don't harm others with our words.

Right Speech doesn't mean saying nothing at all! It reveals the power of what we do say, and can be a challenge to assert ourselves with tact and kindness. It is also a reminder that if we are troubled by something it may be more profitable to have one significant conversation about it and find some resolution, than shoot your mouth off to anyone and everyone about what a terrible situation you are in and what troubles you have.
