8 minutes reflection on Right Speech

Sit comfortably with a straight back, relaxed hands, arms and shoulders. Keep your eyes closed or half open. Relax your mind. Take 3 deep and relaxed breaths. On the exhale you let all thoughts of where you just came from and where you are going to, leave your mind. Be mindful of your breath. Pay full attention to the sensation of the air passing through your nostrils. Sit like this for 2 minutes.

  1. Remember a situation where you have spoken wisely to someone who needed it. Someone who needed support, inspiration or a kind but necessary correction. A situation where your motivation for speaking was to help.
  2. Recall the situation clearly and try to remember the reaction of the other. The persons immediate reaction. And the influence of your words in the time after.
  3. Realize that the benefits of wise words spoken in kindness are immense. They can inspire and support and bring about positive changes. They can change a life. Opposite divisive speech, exaggeration, gossip and harsh words can ruin a life. Speech is potential to do good and to harm.
  4. Rejoice in having done good to someone else.
  5. Consider that speech is a reflection of your state of mind. An angry mind tends to speak angry words and a happy mind kind words. And consider that wise speech does not come naturally. It is something you have to choose for and train in by observing your mind. Be happy that you have taken this time now to do so.
  6. Make a resolution that you in the future will be aware of your speech and try to choose your words wisely. By doing so you will not only become more content and at peace. You will also spread happiness to the ones around you.
